What’s The Connection?

“What Do You Do…or…What Business Are You In?”

Sample Conference Presentations — Diversified Topics

We all get the question — “What do you do?”. And, usually, we start to try and explain the “what” of our work. Been there. Boring.

For me, a version of this scenario occurred recently.

Part of “what” I do is speaking — at conferences, to groups and organizations, on a myriad of topics. For example, two events I spoke at last year had the following topics:

So, an executive asked me… “do you do Excel training or mobile / digital technologies?” Obviously, these are two completely different topics…or are they?

I recently re-watched Simon Sinek’s “Start With Why” and read his book by the same name.

He really made me think about and articulate my “why”. My Why explains the connection between the two topics above.

“On a mission to challenge the status quo to a more productive and effective end…”

It’s simple — I get up every day with a curiosity seeking to improve how things are done. It’s a game for me — and helping others do the same is a great win-win scenario. The feeling of someone benefiting from something I have helped them learn is hard to beat.

This curiosity and focus has enabled me to develop fairly in-depth knowledge and gain experience regarding cloud technologies, digital, mobile, data, social — and become proficient in many of the technologies that enable us to fundamentally rethink WHAT and HOW we do things.

In the last 10 years, the way we do things, and the expectations of our clients & customers has dramatically changed — if we paid attention!

Another read, from 2008, touches on the same “theme”. Jeff Jarvis’s “What Would Google Do” is a great read to really make you think through “what business are you in?”

“…it’s about thinking different” — Jeff Jarvis

So, in my case, it’s not about Excel, digital technologies, cloud, social, etc. — it is about thinking differently.

It’s about constantly learning and relearning and, as Steve Jobs said, “connecting the dots” — reinventing ourselves in the new world we are in!
