Great article, Katia! You really captured the internal struggles I have had with the international “volunteer work” I did during college, including our Habitat for Humanity trip. I certainly don’t have a perfect solution to the questions you raise, but for me, pursuing medicine and focusing on issues in my own backyard made more sense. On those trips, I struggled with my own inefficacy at the task at hand (building a house, teaching English etc) and my inability to even speak the language of the local people. Your advocacy of a “humbler approach” makes a lot of sense. I love that you got in touch with the Ovandos again. It was such a fun trip, great to relive some of the memories. Thanks for sharing this!
