Melinda, you’re right: it should not have taken an experience like this to teach me to be more careful. That said, I met the company through someone I trust, and I did spend some time with the team before becoming an advisor. Moreover, I liked their mission and felt like they’d get high leverage from me as an advisor in fulfilling it. None of this is to excuse my lack of caution — I made a dumb mistake, and I should have known better. Now I do.
