Why Holistic Health is so important to Addiction Treatment?

Gone are the times when addiction treatment involved ‘jail time’ in a poorly managed rehab clinic where patients would be put under inhumane conditions. Addiction treatment no longer solely depends on medication. Instead, modern rehab facilities believe in a holistic approach towards addiction treatment.

What is holistic treatment?

Though absolute abstinence and medication were considered as ways to treat addicts, yet the concept changed over the time. This was mainly because the old techniques failed to achieve the primary goal — complete recovery of an addict and his/her re-entry into normal life. Depending solely on medicines and absolute control over further abuse could hardly bring back a person to his normal self.

Gradually, experts and professionals started turning to other techniques that helped to overcome the ill-effects of addiction in all possible ways and also helped an individual to rise to his/her better self. Such techniques were termed as ‘holistic’ treatment techniques and aim at curing the individual mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Physical health

Via holistic treatment counselors teach recovering addicts about how their actions trigger their addiction habits. Gradually, patients start understanding the triggers and control themselves so as to prevent an urge or craving for further abuse of drugs, alcohol or any other substance. This saves the body from further damage due to addiction. But that’s not the end of it.

Mental health

The next step towards overall well-being is taking care of the mental health of the addict. Most addicts are found to have fuzzy minds that can hardly see straight. Naturally, there is no stopping it when it plummets towards self-destructive thoughts and that’s why dual diagnosis treatment is so important. Therapies are now used by addiction counselors to help addicts control and manage their thought processes more efficiently so that a person can get a hold on his/her racing mind. Not only that, techniques like meditation help improve the general cognitive performance of the individual so that he/she can have better mental capabilities.

Emotional health

Addiction not only harms the body, but it also breaks you down emotionally. Most patients go through bouts of anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, hopelessness, guilt, shame, etc. when they continue on with their addiction and that doesn’t go away immediately, even after one stops the abuse. For an addict to recover, emotionally proper counseling and therapeutic techniques are needed, and that’s exactly what holistic rehab centers do. They help the recovering patients overcome their fear, shame, and guilt and face the reality once again. By including self-contemplative session, self-esteem and confidence can be boosted as well. Moreover, as the mind and the body gradually calm down, depression and stress are easily obliterated too.

Spiritual health

Last, but not the least comes the spiritual health of the addict which needs to be properly restored and living in sobriety if the recovery program has to be considered a success. Techniques like meditation and psychosynthesis are important in this stage. However, it is important to understand that improving spiritual health doesn’t necessarily mean imbuing religious ideas in an individual. It just means helping the person recognize and accept that there is some higher power in existence which is beyond his/her reach.
