Memes are not a solved problem.
Memes have become one of the most influential and present formats on the internet.
Unlike all other digital formats, memes don’t have a strong social app around them. A tiny percentage of meme consumers are also creating them. When was the last time you heard that someone created a meme just for fun? To joke with friends? To meme a friend? To catch on a current meme trend and apply to a friend group? Or vice-versa?
Memes were left out…
While still in high school, I was an avid gamer. So naturally memes were one of the main digital formats I was enjoying. Something that I found odd was that there wasn’t a singular platform for them. They were kinda everywhere. So I started researching why is that the case, and have there been attempts at taking the meme world onto one platform.
Needless to say, there were no successful ones, especially on mobile. Everything revolved around a few apps where people would create memes, and from there, use other social apps to share them.
Why isn’t there a social app around memes? Why were other tries unsuccessful? They seem like a digital format that was left out from the social media club.
Of course, I did what every other teenager would do, I started making my own meme app to get the answers to those questions…
So in short time we became a small passionate team of problem obsessed, professional memers, Google Cloud Server-less Masters, entrepreneurs that worked tirelessly to create a meme experience on mobile, that is accessible to everyone.
To enable everyone to create funny memes. Then share and publish them. All on one platform.
How does it work… 🐸
dumbs
Take photo, or choose one of many meme templates. Now instead of adding a filters or sounds, like on other apps, you can add dumbs.
‘dumbs’ — funny meme captions created by other users that you can easily add to your images
You don’t have to brainstorm a meme for 15 minutes. With dumbs, you just find or take an image that would make for a funny combination with that text. Or vice-versa.
‘Dumbs’ act as the lip-syncing of memes — a low-effort yet engaging way to quickly get a funny meme.
dumb challenge
Everyday, at 6PM PST, you will be tasked to use that day’s most popular dumb to make a meme. If you complete the challenge, 3 days in a row, you will be able to add your own dumbs. If your dumb becomes popular, it can be featured as the dumb challenge, and everyone else that do the challenge, will have to use it.
Breaking the first barrier 💥
We’ve been building Dumbbe with our community over the last year and half. We’ve done countless interviews with the members. Some days, I’ve talked more to a certain user, then to people that are closest to me. We’ve changed the focus of Dumbbe 3 times. But it seems like it’s paying off. Dumbbe removes the first barrier that people face when they try to create a meme, which is deciding what text to add. With the environment that encourages meme sharing, a supportive community and the friendly design, Dumbbe gives people a new way to have fun, joke with friends, and express themselves through digital humor in a lighthearted and interactive manner. Dumbbe enables everyone to create funny memes.

On one side, as the public, influencer friendly platform to share your memes, as a meme creator, with the highest possible reach that helps you with building a following, enabled by our AI-powered meme recommendation algorithm… And on the other side, a genuine social platform for you and your friends, a space where you can utilize it for inside jokes, turning shared experiences into memes, having those group chats where you mostly share memes, on an actual meme platform…

Dumbbe will change memes forever. We see a world where friends are ‘memeing’ each other and adding funny captions to photos they take. We envision more people deciding to reach broader public and build their communities with memes, as meme creators. And finally, we see Dumbbe as the key platform that will enable all of that. It will provide smartphone users with the full meme experience, and only then we’ll see how fun and powerful memes are.
