Dave, I feel many of the same points about the way we use Slack at work as well. I love Slack. I’m a fan of both the product and the people behind it. But it does enable something bad in us about how we communicate.

Simplistically, I see two big issues, though I’m sure there are more: 1) it’s synchronous communication and so much of what helps us is really better asynchronous; and 2) the fact that it’s easy to pipe tools into Slack, but we’re not so easy to pipe back out of Slack. The tools are starting to be there, but the best of tools right now are still very synchronous. Chat-ops is an example.

Anyway, I don’t know what to do about it, but I have recommitted to sending things as email when they need to be asynchronous. I look forward to hearing more about how you tackle your communication issues.
