Embracing Uncertainty….Slowly

Following from my first story I rolled a die for the title of the 2nd and got this, looking at three options to add a little uncertainty into your life

Uncertainty for Growth

So why would you want uncertainty in your life? Surely you want to avoid it, not embrace it?!

I believe that discomfort and a little adversity is linked to personal growth and uncertainty can be used in a controlled fashion for this. I experience this when I moved from my home city to Cardiff, Wales, and found discomfort…in lots of small uncertainties.

You’ll find the challenge is balancing a little discomfort with too much. You’re pushing yourself in small doses, not running a marathon with no training or choosing a totally random country for your next holiday. Unless that is a small step for you…

You can Improvise…

The suggestion to try improvisation classes I first heard on a podcast by Jordan Harbinger so I decided to give it a try at a local group in Exeter.

If your experience is similar you will find yourself in a small group creating scenes, laughing together, building characters and playing off cues given by others.

Improv has benefits to living in the present, for listening to others and experience other perspectives. You may also become more comfortable with with uncertainty as you don’t know what an improvisation class will bring! Here the only audience is your improv group, unless you want to take it further.

You can hopefully find a improvisation class locally but there is a similar more geeky option. Roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons can use improvisation, a popular example found at Critical Role.

You can Reach a Little…

Next you mix a little discomfort into a part of your life.

  1. Think of something in your life which is important but stable. This might be a hobby, relationship, work or a place.
  2. Make a short list of things to improve it and find one that makes you uncomfortable. Get help from friends if you’re not sure.
  3. Set yourself a concrete goal of that one improvement. You are making a small change with one bit of discomfort.

For myself I chose the dance kizomba, which I’ve never mastered. To improve I could find regular lessons, ask better dancers to dance or try a kizomba festival. While dance festivals are a regular thing for me I’ve never done a solely kizomba one and I’m not confident in my level of dancing. It’s an option out of my comfort zone but in a familiar setting.

If this idea works for you then simply extend it to more parts of your life.

You can Organise some Uncertainty…

Lastly if you like lists then you can organise your uncertainty. You’ll choose a mix of 6 safe and more unusual options and choose one at random.

You want an activity that is fairly common but not insignificant. Choosing a TV series to watch, a board game to play for 2 hours or a nice restaurant to visit.

Create your list using 3 typical choices for you, 2 choices that are unusual for you in some way. For the last choice you want something on your “one day” list that you’ve thought about but never gone for.

Choosing nice restaurants for my list I looked for 3 I would normally go for, 1 that a cuisine I haven’t tried much, 1 out of Exeter and the last I’ve heard of many times but never got to.

  1. Harry’s Restaurant
  2. Tea on the Green
  3. Cote
  4. The Salutation Inn in Topsham (expensive)
  5. Pasha (Turkish)
  6. Beer Engine (one day list)
