A part of the process in the creation of my app: Light Cap

Over the course of this week, I have designed a phone application, using POP, that allows citizens to partake in scientific research regarding light exposure for vegetation and flowers. My target audience was simply anyone who is interested in photography of nature because it gives them a cause for usage of the app, to improve their scenery selection, and it helps support scientists in their improvement of society. To cater to both demographics, I included an option for collecting light frequencies for analysis and access to a camera that tags the users location to the photo. Both of these options utilize the camera and the light sensor on every modern mobile device as a unique way to transform the way phones are perceived. The idea was to focus on how the interaction between a platform, a mobile app in this case, and the user would impact the users experience in a scientifically supportive form.

One of the larger issues that I ran into when designing this app was packing an entire interacting experience on every screen with functionality and then doing this for the entire app. In the future, I would have to better identify interactive points that users tend to ease with and try to meet those points with more focus, rather than trying to meet every interactive point known to man on each screen.

My favorite part about this project was working with the POP application, which is awesome because it allows users to create applications using an application. Running into a new application like POP really forced me out of my comfort zone in terms of design because I am usually limited to pencil, paper, and more physical forms, rather than this digital platform. Overall, it was a great process to go through and explore the different ideas that interaction designers have to go through in our everyday products.
