長得明明很像,意思卻天差地遠!是 explicit 還是 implicit?是 weary 還是 wary?是 fight 還是 flight?阿滴幫你整理了十個常見的「雙胞胎反義字」look-alike antonyms,讓你一次搞清楚這些易混淆字!

1. wild & mild

wild (a.) excited in nature or behavior 狂野的
: He felt a wild rage and acted on impulse.
(他在狂怒的影響下衝動行事)

mild (a.) gentle in nature or behavior 溫馴的
: They had a mild disagreement.
(他們稍微不同意彼此的意見)

2. feast & fast

feast (v.) to eat large amounts of food 大吃
: The people feasted for three days in celebration of the royal wedding.
(為了慶祝皇室婚禮,百姓饗宴了三天)

fast (v.) to eat no food for a period of time 禁食
: The king ordered everyone to fast immediately after because the food ran out.
(國王馬上下令禁食因為食物都被吃光了)

3. weary & wary

weary (a.) lacking strength or energy 疲憊的
: The backpackers were weary after a long day of hiking.
(背包客經過一整天的登山都累了)

wary (a.) being aware or cautious 警醒的
: They decided to set up camp earlier because they were wary of the weather.
(他們決定先架帳篷,因為眼看天氣就要不好了)

4. shame & fame

shame (n.) the condition of dishonor or disgrace 羞辱
: Her misconduct on the Internet brought shame to her family.
(她在網路上的不當舉止帶給了全家族羞辱)

fame (n.) the condition of being well-known 名氣
: YouTube has brought many unexpected fame.
(YouTube帶給許多人意料之外的名氣)

5. fight & flight

fight (n.) confronting a violent physical struggle 對決
flight (n.) running away in order to escape from danger 逃跑
: Fight or flight is a response that helps you respond to a dangerous situation.
(打或逃反應是你的身體對危險狀況的處理)

6. adore & abhor

adore (v.) to love or admire someone very much 愛慕
: The mother completely adores her newborn son.
(那位媽媽極其愛著她新出生的寶貝)

abhor (v.) to hate or despise someone very much 恨惡
: However, she abhors the scars that the surgery left.
(不過,她很討厭手術後的傷疤)

7. scrawny & brawny

scrawny (a.) very thin 瘦
: He’s a man of small stature, scrawny and uptight.
(他是個小個子,又瘦小又龜毛)

brawny (a.) very muscular 壯
: Although most girls won’t admit this, they like men brawny.
(雖然大多女生不承認,不過他們都喜歡男生壯一點)

8. explicit & implicit

explicit (a.) very clear and complete 直接了當
: Please give me explicit instructions, I’m not good at taking hints.
(請給我清楚的指示,我不太懂人的暗示)

implicit (a.) not clearly or directly stated 間接暗示
: There is a sense of urgency implicit in his tone.
(他語氣間透露了一股急迫感)

9. discreet & discrete

discreet (a.) vague and subtle 不引人注意的
: Try to be discreet, don’t draw too much attention.
(低調一點,不要引人注目)

discrete (a.) separate and distinct 分別明顯的
: A parent must cater to the discrete needs of each child.
(身為一個家長一定要好好照顧到每個小孩不同的需求)

10. emigrate & immigrate

emigrate (v.) to leave a country or region to live elsewhere 從…移民
: I emigrated from Taiwan.
(我從台灣移民走了)

immigrate (v.) to come to a country to live there 移民到…
: I immigrated to Singapore.
(我移民去新加坡了)

英文單字無窮無盡,容易混淆的單字也是不勝枚舉。像這樣按照主題性把一對一對的單字介紹出來也有個危險是讓大家更容易混淆。為了避免這個狀況,可以自己刻意去做兩個字之間的分別。比如說,discreet 跟 discrete,一個是不明顯一個是明顯分開,那 ete 的 t 把兩個 e 分開的 “discrete” 就是「明顯分開」;或是,emigrate 跟 immigrate,一個是出去一個是進來,那 e 開頭的就代表 exit 所以 “emigrate” 就是「從…移民」。有這樣刻意做兩個字的分別,下次看到易混淆的字就不會容易被騙啦
