Overhead

When you look at the structure of your company, you will see that people perform different roles. Some roles may be perceived as directly impacting or creating the revenue stream. Others are hopefully the roles that support revenue indirectly. These are the overhead roles.
When somebody wants to increase the revenue, it’s unlikely you will hear them say, “We need to hire more testers.”
Overhead roles include testing, QA, support, maintenance, tech documentation. And leadership.
If you are in an overhead role, you may feel the pressure — the threat that if the company was to downsize, the overhead roles are the first to go. The company may be willing to compromise on quality, customer support, etc. That’s a very short-sighted narrow view. It highlights that they do not understand the value overhead adds.
Companies with a long-term vision, understand that they need to keep their overhead to a minimum. So rather that compromising on the values the overhead brings, they empower people in overhead roles to multiply the output of the primary revenue-producing roles.
Embrace the overhead!
Broaden your view because the cost is not the only value. If you are a leader, you are an overhead too.
