I’m curious if you told him why explicitly why he wasn’t hired? Obviously you don’t owe it to the world to educate this candidate, but that’s the most impactful thing you could have done (apart from not hiring him).

On the other hand I can see that being a potential minefield from a HR perspective, especially since in your own words he wasn’t over the top or outrageous. I could totally see some MRA type dragging you into a legal quagmire on that one if they really wanted to.
