I love this article, and you might be onto something, but I have always believed the saying,
“Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by ignorance.”
I don’t believe there is some consciously held agenda by power brokers in the world to keep us unhappy. I do think they highlight small social victories to distract us from the grand theft of public wealth that they commit, and to satiate potential revolutions before they start, but I doubt they have an agenda to make sure women are sexually shamed and blacks continue to suffer institutionalized racism.
The vast majority of sexists and racists do not even realize that they are!
Conservatives all throughout history have brains that are wired differently. Studies on Liberal vs Conservative brains show brain scans of both reacting differently to something considered to be a new idea to that person. The Liberal mind lights up in the conscious mind and gets excited at ideas. The Conservative mind gets a strong visceral reaction in the fear center of the brain when exposed to the same idea.
Conservatives just are, and they fight new ideas out of Fear. They quite literally Conserve the status quo and they have been doing so for thousands of years. They were defending slavery so long ago because it would affect the status quo to abolish it. Today now that mainstream society has accepted slavery is universally evil and incorporated this idea into our culture, only now the Conservative minds will accept it as an obvious truth. They don’t realize the Conservative minds before them were devoted to fighting this idea out of Fear.
Progress is made when the cultural idea is so widely adopted that Conservatives of the time don’t even recall when there was ever even a debate about it being a truth. So invariably social progress is painfully slow.
The shame idea is the easy part. We can collectively overcome our shame quite easily, by adopting self love, treating ourselves and others in a way where we don’t spread negativity and instead spread positive words, we abstain from gossip, we don’t make assumptions about each other and be active listeners in communication, then we transform ourselves into something powerful and good where we realize not to take things personally.
We judge ourselves all the time, but when others judge us, we only feel shame if our inner judge agrees with that opinion on some level. If someone judges us and out inner judge does not agree then thst person has no power over us to give us shame. All shame comes from within and only by agreement do we punish ourselves.
So shed these agreements you carry and focus on the positive things you do agree on and we can all transcend this nightmare we feel like we are trapped in.
