One important thing that always seems to be left out of the “burning cleaner” debate is the issue of extraction. Fact is when it comes to both coal and natural gas (even oil), even if you had the technology to make zero emissions, the extraction process is still harming people. There have been over 25 peer reviewed scientific studies that have shown the extraction of coal is harmful to human health especially with practices like mountaintop removal in my home state of West Virginia. People in the wake of extraction need to be part of the narrative for cleaner burning fuels. How could it possibly be clean energy if the act of removing it from the ground poisons people.
