Thanksgiving | Holiday | 5K | Family | Turkey Dinner
Or how fast can a Turkey Trot?
For reasons beyond my ken, the younger family members home for the Thanksgiving holiday rose before sunup this morning to venture forth and participate in an annual event called the Turkey Trot.
As they informed me the first year they took part in this insanity, it does not involve riding upon saddled turkeys. Needless to say, I found this disappointing. While I’ve seen some sizeable turkeys, I’ve never seen one of sufficient size to be ridden by an adult human.
As it turns out, the Turkey Trot is so named because the participants run (trot) 5 kilometers/3.2 miles through the cold American Thanksgiving morning.
There was a time, many years ago, that I might have been enticed to take part in this odd ritual. Such adventurous undertakings are far in my past. I will leave such “fun” activities to the young.
There is a charitable component to the event. The proceeds from the trotters’ registration fees help fund programs at our local YMCA.
It’s all in great fun and an excellent way to build up an appetite for Thanksgiving Dinner.
