The following day, I decided to go into town for breakfast at the Crack ’Em and Stack’ Em restaurant.
“Well, Thom Bailey,” Nancy, the hostess, effused when I walked through the door. “To what do we owe the pleasure? Getting tired of your own cooking, are you?”
I smiled at her good-natured ribbing. “As a matter of fact, Nan, yes, I am. Besides, where else is a fellow going to go when he’s craving a Pomelet?”
“This here is the only place I know where you can get one,” Nancy replied.
The Pomelet was a breakfast specialty at Crack ’Em and Stack ’Em. They made it by scrambling an equal portion of eggs and pancake batter together before pouring the mixture onto the pan. Like an omelet, the cook let it cook nearly through before adding the fillings and folding the whole thing in half. The dish had all the best attributes of pancakes and omelets. A drizzle of real maple syrup finished the morning masterpiece.
