Day 4 — Amarillo, Texas to Holbrook, Arizona
Do you like train whistles? If you do, then you would have loved the Amarillo KOA. The tracks are not far from the campground and trains running east and west pass through the crossing gates there every 20 to 30 minutes all night long.
Despite the trains, we got a good night’s sleep. The cabin was comfortable and the staff was friendly and helpful.
We left Amarillo ten minutes before 6 a.m. after a stop for an on-the-go breakfast and reached the Texas/New Mexico state line as the sun was rising over that part of Texas.
In the first rest area we stopped at in New Mexico, I found a guy sleeping on the floor in the Men’s Room. He was using a duffel bag for a pillow and his coat as a blanket. All I could imagine was that he was sleeping in his car and it got too cold so he moved into the bathroom.
The missus and I were both disappointed by the condition of the second rest area in New Mexico. The parking lot was filthy with trash and dirty pampers. It was plain that very few of…
