Obama can’t help himself

By Alfredo Rodriguez III

President Barack Obama has the poor habit of using mass-shooting tragedies to pursue his zealous political agenda against the Second Amendment. Rather than respectfully mourn, console, and pray for the victims and their families reeling from devastation, he wastes little time hopping onto his soapbox to score quick political points with his liberal Democratic base.

Nearly a dozen families are suffering today following the loss of their loved ones from the tragic shooting at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College, and almost another dozen victims are injured, yet President Obama thought it was appropriate to immediately get in front of the television cameras and tell Americans, “this is something we should politicize” because thoughts and prayers are not enough.

The political expediency and cavalier attitude couldn’t be more appalling. This isn’t the first time President Obama has shown his insensitivity. It’s a pattern and a habit.

It happened after the shooting at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. It happened following the horrific murder of more than twenty children and adults in Newtown, Connecticut. It happened when a dozen innocent lives were murdered at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. And following the massacre at Virginia Tech University where nearly three dozen were murdered, it happened again. President Obama and Democrats quickly used all of these misfortunes as an opportunity to politicize the moment.

President Obama simply can’t help himself.

To be fair, in each instance President Obama has, indeed, offered public words of condolence. He’s even honored and recognized the slain by calling for flags to be flown at half-mast. But without hesitation, President Obama has immediately seized upon each tragedy to ingratiate himself with his liberal base by insisting on the erosion and dismantling of the Second Amendment.

I don’t discount President Obama’s sympathy for the victims and families affected is sincere but his immediate actions and proclivity to politicize these moments need to be called out. They’re divisive. They’re offensive. And they’re wrong.

Mr. President, the effects of prayer are powerful. So like many Americans, I will continue to pray for the victims and their families, as well as for the deeply and clearly troubled man who committed these murders, and save the political debate over the Second Amendment for a later date.
