Why Art?

We live in a hectic world. It seems as if we exist in a world of inevitable tragedies that are just waiting around the corner. In a world that sometimes feels so serious, the arts can seem trivial.

However I think that art is what keeps people from being consumed by the anxiety and chaos of everyday life. It allows us to experience something unique, and requires us to use our creative intelligence, which many of us neglect too often.

Fort Collins isn’t quite as chaotic as New York City, but that’s not to say that you can’t still be overwhelmed in a town. Fortunately, if you find yourself needing a break, Fort Collins artists are ready to help.

You don’t even need your wallet. A walk around Old-Town will take you by colorful transformers, hidden murals and painted pianos. If you don’t mind playing in public or playing out of tune, feel free to tickle the ivories.

There have been many days that I’ve rushed through, going through the motions. It becomes easy to live passionlessly and joylessly when you allow it. It is much more difficult to do the same when you allow art to influence you. With the passion and emotion that goes into art, it stands to reason that a piece of art can have a powerful impact on the person experiencing it.

To my fellow Fort Collin-ites, don’t allow yourself to live passionlessly. Whether you know it or not you are surrounded by a vibrant community of creative individuals and you could be one of them. Even if you don’t want to be an artist yourself, there is something for everyone to appreciate.

Art is not necessarily a way of escaping, it is a way of expressing yourself when language falls short. But ultimately it can be whatever you want it to be.

Life is hard. When you focus entirely on the reasons life sucks it only stands to make it worse. Remember to spend time focusing on the things that make you feel something out of the ordinary. And remember, art will always be there for you.
