Why does Clinton dominate the black vote?
While Hillary Clinton’s campaign is described in contrast from Bernie Sanders’ campaign as in lacking enthusiasm, Clinton still dominates the black vote in primary states such as South Carolina. However when you look closely at Hillary’s history, it seems as if the African Americans voting for Clinton have
not done so much research into her background in comparison to Bernie’s.
The Sanders Campaign always discusses how disproportionally blacks are jailed compared to white Americans. Bernie often points his finger to the massive incarceration rates that the United States have, in fact the highest incarceration rate in the entire world. Bernie’s campaign is based around big money and getting it out of politics; he says that this disproportional incarceration rate with minorities is because of private prisons and them profiting by incarcerating large numbers.
Hillary has also attacked the private prisons for profit in many debates and rallys; but is this genuine? Most would say no.
The Clinton Campaign allows big money interests to donate to her campaign (obviously because they really just want a woman in the White House) and some of those big money interests are in fact private prison comapnies. The specific ones lobbying money into Clinton’s campaign are GEO and CCA groups which are spending millions of dollars to make sure she is elected president. So I would like to suggest a question to anyone reading this; do you think Hillary will end private prisons even though they are helping her get elected and donate millions to her campaign?
Besides from the private prison issue, Clinton was very active in politics even during the Civil Rights Movement. That is great! However when you read into the facts, you will find out that a young conservative Hillary Rodham worked on Barry Goldwater’s election campaign. Who is Barry Goldwater you may ask? Goldwater was a conservative from Arizona who served in congress and became the 1964 Republican Presidential Nominee, eventually losing to Lyndon B. Johnson. Besides from Goldwater being a conservative, he voted AGAINST the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Yes, you read that correctly. Besides from him having this view, Hillary put forth an effort to help him get elected.
Now you may ask; where was Bernie during this time? Bernie was a Civil Rights activist during this time, and in fact he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in protest to the racial divides and segregation during this time. He also hosted a sit-in to protest the segregation in dorms at the University of Chicago in his early life. So why is Bernie looked at as a second choice for black voters?
In my opinion, I believe there are three factors that play into why Hillary has a strong hold on the black vote over Bernie.
1. Bill Clinton is admired by the African American community even today; it is quite difficult to find a black person who was alive during the Bill Clinton era who disliked him.
2. Bernie fails to mention his activism during the Civil Rights Movement during debates, on social media, at rallys etc
3. One of the only times Bernie reaches out to the African American community is when he mentions disproportional incarceration between different races. This can come off as insulting to many.
In my opinion, if Bernie wants to take at least some of the black voters supporting Hillary, he must clearly state his background and contrast it to Hillary’s and until he does so I think this struggle will remain a problem that can severely damage the Sanders Campaign.
