Complacency
Complacency is often thought of as the place where one gets comfortable in life. It can be when they are in a relationship and suddenly their physical appearance doesn’t matter anymore, so they ease off of their workouts. It can be when they have reached a point in their career where they have enough money so they no longer go that extra mile that they did to get them to this point. However, I think that someone can become complacent even while chasing a dream.
The more that you do something, the more it becomes a habit. As it becomes a habit, it becomes easier to do. This is both a blessing and a curse. While you are now doing this thing without really having to think about it, it can hinder you from wanting to push beyond that boundary. You can still become complacent, even when working hard. This is a main factor in people not seeing something through. No matter what goals they set in the beginning, they can change along the way. As you see progress, you begin to gain more confidence, and you get this sense of security. You become more comfortable in whatever it is that you’re doing, bringing about complacency. I have personally seen this in myself.
Just a couple years ago I found myself weighing more than I ever had before. I knew that I had to make a change and I set a goal for myself to lose a certain amount of weight. I was persistent in achieving this goal, yet when it finally happened, I became complacent. The intensity at which I worked out dropped drastically. The strictness of my diet fell out and I began to fall back into old ways. Over time, I began to pack some of the weight back on. While it wasn’t all of the weight I had lost, I still began to feel bad again. This was all because of complacency.
My new rule is never to get too comfortable. No matter what it is in life, things can always change up faster than expected. You can gain that weight back. You can lose that job. Hell, you can even lose someone important from your life. Nothing is promised and by remaining uncomfortable, rather than becoming complacent, you are conditioned for it. You know what hard work is and you know that is what it takes to make anything work in this world. Sure, there are outside factors that can cause these things to happen, but by remaining diligent, you can be sure that they don’t happen because of anything you’ve done personally. Complacency can be a killer, so be careful getting too comfortable.
