Blog #2- What is the cloud? And how it is important to me?
What is the cloud?
The cloud is a type of storage where instead of being a physical type of storage such as a hard drive or flash drive, its completely online. Though its not completely online as the files are stored on a remote computer somewhere in the world. Its a also a type of service that people can use that will save and backup their data and maintain it as well. It actually by sending files through a network and into a server where it does its service of saving and maintaining the storage. Another thing is that being a service, it costs money for the amount of storage you want. Although, it not that expensive being how much in 1 terabytes of storage only costing 10 dollars a month. Some companies that give the cloud include Apple, Google, Amazon, and GoDaddy.
How is the cloud important to me?
The cloud is very important to me as I basically use it in my daily life. From social media to homework, I’m almost always using. An example I how I use the cloud would be using Google Drive, which stores all my papers I have wrote or all the slideshows I have made. Another example would be if I ever need any pictures that I don’t have stored on my phone, I could easily go to an app such as Dropbox, to access the photos or videos that are stored on the cloud. The practical thing about this is that I can access my files from any computer since its not on my personal hard drive. Social media as well is like the cloud since it saves all my photos and videos I have posted in the past, without having to store in on an physical drives, which its pretty cool. Another thing that makes it really important to me is that is backs up all my data so I don’t my files unlike a hard drive, which if it dies, basically makes it impossible for me to get back all my data back. Also, the cloud makes it easier for others to access the files you want to share without having to send it to them through email or messaging. An example of how this is applied is when I needed help with my paper and wanted my friends to be able to access it. All I had to do is press the share button on the document and share it to them and they could easily go to Google docs, which is a type of cloud service, and go on the document I’m working on. Another thing that’s so good about the cloud is the feature of saving what I have on my doc after every word I type. Google docs, which uses this feature, saves me when I’m typing and suddenly my WiFi goes out or something. I won’t have to worry at all since I know it has already saved the progress I have made so far to Google Drive. All in all, if the cloud didn’t exist, doing work or sharing files would be a lot harder and less practical, which is just a hassle.
