Kue Putu (Indonesian’s Food)
Here’s how to make “Kue Putu”:
Ingredients:
- 200 grams rice flour
- 100 grams palm sugar (gula aren)
- 100 ml coconut milk
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Pandan leaves (for green color and aroma)
- Grated coconut (for coating)
Instructions:
1. Preparing the Filling:
— Mix the grated palm sugar with a little water in a pan. Heat the mixture until the palm sugar dissolves. Strain to remove any impurities.
2. Preparing the Dough:
— In a bowl, mix rice flour, coconut milk, and salt. Blend well to create a smooth dough.
3. Adding Aroma and Color:
— Blend pandan leaves with a little water to extract the green color and aroma. Add the pandan extract to the dough and mix until evenly colored.
4. Shaping the Cake:
— Take a small portion of the dough and flatten it in your palm. Put a teaspoon of the palm sugar filling in the center. Fold the dough to encase the filling and shape it into a cylindrical form.
5. Steaming:
— Place the shaped cakes onto banana leaves or greased molds. Steam the cakes for about 10–15 minutes until they are cooked through.
6. Coating with Grated Coconut:
— After steaming, roll the cakes in grated coconut while they are still warm. The moisture will help the coconut adhere.
7. Ready to Serve:
— Kue Putu is now ready to be enjoyed as a delicious and aromatic snack.
Kue Putu is a popular traditional snack in Indonesia, known for its distinctive cylindrical shape, green color, and sweet palm sugar filling. It’s often served as a treat during various celebrations or simply as a delightful snack.
