Artificial Intelligence in the Armed Forces
Been you missing AI? How can we set aside the technology that defeats the prominent Grandmasters across the globe, makes better sales than any Oriflame shop assistant with many years of experience, and unbiasedly calculates millions with no mistake.
Artificial intelligence goes from strength to strength, and the number of the segments it’s applied in is growing.
And here comes a moment to be careful or rejoice…
One chill autumn morning, a mustached enlistment officer knocked on a server room’s door and delivered a military subpoena to AI:
“Dear artificial intelligence, you are now serving to…”
Yeah, that’s true, many countries are introducing AI into home armed forces, and Russia is not an exception. Of course, the process is held in a way that differs from the one described by the article’s author. Those are only memories of the difficult past in the military. Off sentiments…
AI on service
Our Western partners, particularly from Korea and the UK, were the first to see the potential of artificial intelligence in armed forces. Initially, AI was designed to protect data and combat cyber attacks. In the long run, the spheres of its application will be growing.
Scientists from the University of Southern California and labs of the United States Army created a new AI-powered system that helps soldiers train alertness, memory, and take effective actions on a battlefield, which accelerated the process by 13 times. Currently, recruits do not have to march along the hardstand and sweep leaves within 2 years. This technology allows to undergo training within 11 months only — epic!)
Smart armored fighting vehicle
Smart armor is one of the most popular directions.
Again, the Americans developed a system that will be part of a new-generation infantry fighting vehicle. It will assist soldiers in data collecting, combining, and processing in the course of fighting.
Artificial intelligence integrated into such a battle unit will as well analyze various parameters of board equipment, sensors, and electronics.
Besides, a neural network will track performance of armor’s engines to detect defects. Then, artificial intelligence will conduct all data to operators as well as provide a corresponding forecast of military equipment efficiency.
Many countries use the most powerful and perfect weapon — a smart rocket.
So, what makes it different from a traditional, less smart rocket? The first one can defeat anti-aircraft warfare at hypersonic speed. It rounds a land surface, performs on-course maneuvers and reaches the pointed target with no human assistance. As the training demonstrates, sometimes it’s more reliable.
My suit is my castle
A modern soldier has to carry more and more weapons, protection systems, systems for terrain intelligence and enemy tracking.
Meanwhile, the number of calculating systems that inform about a current situation on a battlefield in a real-life mode is going up. Unfortunately, it’s impossible for a soldier to bring all necessary equipment.
Apart from heavy equipment, a soldier also has to take part in active combat operations, easily and quickly move on a battlefield. To help soldiers, special military exoskeletons are designed.
The Russians currently show the best results in this sphere, particularly the Russian exoskeleton Ratnik 3 that caused a stir at all specialized exhibitions. However, for historical reasons, its main competitor — the U.S. — is on Russian heels with its suit that is available only in a virtual form nowadays. The Americans haven’t shown its functional prototype.
Will smart soldiers rise: what do well-informed people say?
Scientists and programmers frequently warn of the production of the automated aggressive weapon. For example, the departed physicist Stephen Hawking voiced a presumption that mankind will end because of the rise of machines. And the inventor Elon Musk shares this point of view.
According to Hawking and Musk, it is the Terminator who would run the revolution. However, the world leaders imagine Iron Man (Marvel Comics hero, by the way). In fact, we do not know what the future holds, but it’s better to start collecting money for a superhero suit right now — as a last resort, you can work as a cashier at McDonald’s and earn something to launch own smart startup)
