Why I Refuse To Call My Daughter A Tomboy

Wow. Thank you. You just opened my eyes. All my life I was proud to be called a tomboy. As a parent I enjoyed sharing this label with my feisty daughter as she wanted to know why she was so different to the feminine girls in her class. But I was so wrong! Yes, this label smacks of gender stereotyping. And yes, girls can be any kind of girl they want to be. Five seconds after reading your article I sat my two gorgeous girls down and told them I’d made a mistake. No more tomboys. You are you! And then we had their first real conversation about feminism. And you know what my little tough girl said? “Feminism isn’t only for girls, it’s for boys too!” So true. Xxxx
