Review: Shane Ryan’s book is full of noteworthy information about the 2021 Ryder Cup and the history of the competition. He uses this information to support three theses:
1. Even though USA Ryder Cup teams had been superior (based on World Rankings) to European Ryder Cup teams, the Europeans had been winning with regularity for the past 40 years — which put a tremendous amount of pressure on the 2021 American team to begin to reverse the trend.
2. The management style and philosophy of Ryder Cup captains has a significant impact on the results.
3. It benefits the captains to minimize the use of pre-set criteria when selecting team players and use as many “captain’s picks” as possible.

As the title suggests, most of the book was devoted to the first thesis. Although the same claim could have been made about the 2016 Ryder Cup, this thesis was the easiest to prove, and Mr. Ryan’s writing is effective in substantiating it.

He also makes decent arguments for the second and third theories, but they are not as convincing. Mr. Ryan presents some alternatives to these two theories — particularly in Chapter 14, which discusses seven theories of why the Europeans have been winning so consistently and concludes that the best theory is #7 — Europe has had better leadership. But there is validity to the alternative theories; so Ryan’s conclusions on the importance of management style and captain’s picks are not necessarily wrong, but they seem to be overemphasized.

The number of factual errors ((nine of which are listed below) weakens the book’s impact. These errors might not all be significant, but it is disappointing to see that the proof-reading was so weak. And it also makes readers wonder if Mr. Ryan made other errors in statements that were harder to verify.

Factual errors
Page 16: “In the eighteen Ryder Cups between 1983 — the start of the modern competitive era — and 2018, why did Europe win twelve Ryder Cups to just six for the Americans?”
Correction Mr. Ryan counts the 1989 tie as a win for the Europeans on this page and 3 other pages. He does this because in the event of a tie, the team that had most recently won the cup gets to retain the cup. But there is still a difference between a tie and a win.

Page 47: “[The 1969 Ryder Cup] was tied at 15 points with just a single match left on the course.”
Correction: The 1969 Ryder Cup at Royal Birkdale was tied at 15 1/2 with just the Nicklaus/Jacklin match remaining to be completed. Which is how the final score was 16 to 16 when the final match was halved.

Page 69: “Phil Mickelson’s a loser in the Ryder Cup,” Tiziani said, on the topic of detrimental players. “What the f-dud are you doing with him?”
Correction: Dennis Tiziani (Steve Stricker’s father-in-law) is misguided, and the author should have excluded this quote or should have corrected him. Mickelson’s record (18 wins-22 losses-7 ties) is better than Tiger Woods’ record (13–21–3). And Mickelson had a winning record (7–5–1) in the four Ryder Cups before 2021 even though Team USA only won only one of the four. When one factors in that on page 252 Mr. Ryan does include an example of Mickelson not being a “loser” by significant contribution to the Saturday night team meeting of the 2014 Ryder Cup, one concludes that the only reason for the inclusion of Tiziani’s quote is the author’s proclivity for inserting the f-dud.

Page 83: “It was only the second time in history they’d ever held a lead after the first day.”
Correction: I cannot determine what point Mr. Ryan is trying to make, but it cannot be accurate. If he is referring to the entire history of the Ryder Cup, Great Britain won 3 matches (1929, 1933, and 1957), so the British obviously held leads after the first day in those 3 matches. If he is referring to the history of the Ryder Cup including all of Europe, this 1983 match was only the third such Ryder Cup competition, and Europe did not have any leads after the first day in either the 1979 or 1981 matches.

Page 170: “That year, it was the Europeans reversing a 9–7 pairs deficit on the road to win by a point, punctuated by another obscure Irishman, Philip Walton, earning the winning point, and Per-Ulrik Johansson defeating a US rookie named Phil Mickelson.”
Correction: In 1995, Mickelson won all 3 of his matches including defeating Johansson (a former college teammate at ASU) in their singles match.

Page 215: “Finau had also managed to launch himself up the Ryder Cup standings. He would end up finishing seventh, just outside the automatic qualifying, but considering how well he had done in Paris — he was the only one of Furyk’s picks who proved himself worthy of the choice, and the only American besides Justin Thomas to post a winning record — and considering how well his long game was suited to Whistling Straits, there was no longer any doubt that he would make Steve Stricker’s team.”
Correction: In addition to Thomas and Finau, Jordan Spieth and Webb Simpson also had winning records.

Page 224: “In John Feinstein’s The Last Major, Davis Love III bristled when presented with this idea.”
Correction: The title of Feinstein’s book was “The First Major!”

Page 314: “The largest turnaround in Sunday singles history was a 5.5-point swing by the Europeans at Medinah,”
Correction: On Sunday at Medinah, the Europeans outscored the Americans 8.5 to 3.5 — a 5.0-point swing, not a 5.5-point swing!

Page 323: “Davis Love referenced basketball to put it in perspective: “You don’t get a forty-point lead at halftime and come out at halftime and go, ‘Okay, we’re going to play prevent defense the rest of the game.’”
Correction: The term “prevent defense” applies to football, not basketball.

Review: One of my absolute favorite things is when an expert in any subject tells stories about them in such an engaging, engrossing way, that it feels like you’re an expert right along with them. This is precisely what Shane Ryan achieves in this book. He takes a subject that I’m familiar with as a golf fan, but pulls back the curtain on decades of history to give me such a deeper appreciation for this stunning event.

Thanks to this book, I’ll never be a fan of the Ryder Cup again in the same way. Gone are the days of casually following and rooting for the Americans because that’s where I’m from. Now I understand the history and passions and narratives that have coursed through this tournament, and it’s all thanks to this book.

Special kudos to the author for titling his book before knowing the result of the 2021 event. A called shot to rival any.

Review: Mr Ryan avoided the common pitfall of assigning one team as being led by a genius triumphing over a collection of egotistical buffoons. Instead he provides a detailed and nuanced depiction of the Ryder Cup competitions leading up to and including Whistling Straits. I highly recommend this book.

Review: Shane Ryan has written a masterpiece about the Ryder Cup. Not only does he do a wonderful job breaking down the 2021 Cup, but his grasp of the history of the tournament, from early American dominance to the more recent swing of European wins is evident throughout. I couldn’t put it down, and I think it’s a must read for not only every golf fan, but for sports fans in general.
