Twenty years ago today, four hijacked commercial airplanes crashed into the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania, killing 2,996 people. More would die in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; and later from the effects of toxic dust released when the towers fell.
