Shinji Ikari

Shinji initially displays a passive and laid-back personality, having inherited such traits from his relaxed life with his sensei. When told to pilot Eva-01, he refuses, unwilling to do so. Although Shinji denies it, he craves praise and eventually begins piloting Eva-01 in order to gain his father’s approval and love.

He also constantly tells himself “I shouldn’t run away!”, demonstrating once again his need to move forward and let go of the past. Shinji exhibits an intense fear of emotional pain and being hated or left behind, likely due to his perception of being abandoned in his youth and subsequently blaming himself for not being good enough to force his father to stay.

Overall, Shinji is shown to be introverted and out of touch with physical reality due to having little to no meaningful contact with others. He is quite uncomfortable at social parties and often finds it difficult to control his emotions towards others due to his difficulty in letting go of the past. He is shown to the extreme, giving up many lives, even his own, to save one person.

Due to intense nostalgia and a fragile emotional state, Shinji prefers to shut himself off from the world, as evidenced by the headphones he wears quite often connected to an SDAT music player. He usually plays tracks 25 “You Are the Only One” and 26 “Blue Legend”, although in episodes 02 and 23 the songs vary depending on the background music and vocals.
