How Pokemon Go Struck a Chord with Millenials
Ever since Pokemon Go was released about a week ago, you can’t walk down a road without seeing at least one person with their heads down looking at their phones while strolling down the street. The level of popularity this app has gained in a matter of days is out of this world.
To combine reality and the virtual world as exceptionally as Pokemon Go has is uncalled for. Name a game which has had this much social impact and popularity in such a short period of time? I doubt you can name one.
The company in charge of Pokemon Go (Niantic), have truly struck a chord with us younglings that go back to our roots mainly due to one variable. Before we go further. Listen to the original theme song soundtrack.
I know you want to.
Listened to it? Rush of nostalgia? Felt good? Memories come flooding right back to you, didn’t they?
You see, this is exactly where Pokemon Go got it right.
Remember these lyrics?
“To catch them is my real test,
To train them is my cause.
I will travel across the land,
Searching far and wide.”
Now, think back to Pokemon Go. The game has just given you the key to your childhood fantasy. You now have the ability to catch Pokemon, to train them, and yes, to travel across the land, searching far and wide (if you really wanted to) just like a real Pokemon trainer. It’s in augmented reality that separates Pokemon Go from all the other Pokemon games out there and every other app game matter of fact.
THIS. Is the reason why Pokemon Go has trumped every other Pokemon game in existence in under a week and surpassed app giants like Tinder and Twitter (PLUS IT’S FREE). Pokemon Go has provided you a means of living a fantasy that you have always wanted since you were a kid.
“Pokemon Go has provided you a means of living your fantasy.”
What you can learn from this titan of an app: aim to prod the nostalgia in people and you will discover that you can gain massive traction in whatever you’re doing and you’ll get people’s attention. Everything from marketing, to content, to app development, to hosting events. Prod that nostalgia and you will see how powerful it can be.
Nothings new about Pokemon Go. They’ve basically just given the game mechanics a “renovation” and made the old new. It’s proved to work extremely well.
You could write a whole damn essay about Pokemon Go and the reasons for its success. You could reverse engineer why the game is so good, why and how it became so trendy, why the target demographic is between 18–25 and not younger kids, how the game capitalises on the psychology of Pokestops and defending gyms, the correlation between high leveled Pokemon and social status, rah rah rah. But I’ll save those for possible later articles.
Until then, I wish you all the best on your Pokemon Catching journey.
CATCH EM ALL.
TEAM MYSTIC BABY
