Jill Purce Tibetan Over Toning

Anyone who is a fan of over toning, and who believes in the healing power of this ancient Tibetan chanting, is likely familiar with Jill Purce. Jill is one of the first modern spiritualists to introduce the international sound healing movement to people around the world. Her rediscovery of ancient vocal techniques has enabled her to not only teach others the power of overtone chanting, but also the spiritual potential of the voice as an instrument for healing and meditation.
She is the author of the book, The Mystic Spiral, Journey of the Soul and has had a strong influence in the installation of the labyrinths in his Grace Cathedral, San Francisco in the 1990’s. The Bishop of California stated about Jill, “She helped inspire the birth of the modern labyrinth movement. Jill’s groundbreaking work with the labyrinth was inspiring, informative and important…it couldn’t have been done without her work.”
Over Toning Experiences
For those of you who haven’t yet been introduced to over toning, or as it is sometimes called, overtone chanting, overtone singing, harmonic singing, harmonic chanting, khöömii, höömii and throat singing, it is a technique that takes the natural spectrum of the voice and makes it audible. When listening to over toning, some have said that they can see the rainbow colours of the voice and they have heard angelic or bell-like tones over the voices of the chanters.
The definition of over toning is: over toning is a form of chanting on one note where the overtones are selectively amplified by changing the shape of the resonant cavities of the mouth, larynx and pharynx.” This takes notes that are always present and usually inaudible and adds a “colour” to them.
Originally, over toning, or over chanting, is found in Mongolia, Tuva and Tibet and is done by the monks as part of their ceremonial practice. A form of over toning was brought to the West by Karlheinz Stockhausen, a mentor of Jill’s in the 1970’s.
Jill Purce offers a wide range of over toning workshops designed to enlighten others and introduce them to the natural healing powers of this ancient technique. Her lectures, The Healing Voice and Healing Family and Ancestors, have been attended by thousands of people from around the world and her website, JillPurce.com contains information about Jill, her career and over toning.
