PROs and CONs of 15 MINUTE CITIES

In recent years, the concept of 15 minute cities has been gaining traction among urban planners and policy makers.

The idea is their attempt at making cities more convenient and efficient to live in by reducing the time it takes to access essential services, such as healthcare, childcare, food, educational facilities and transportation. This concept is based on the idea that all of these services will be within a 15 minute walk or bike ride from each other and each citizens residence.

PROS

The concept proposes that once in place for residents, it has the potential to reduce traffic congestion, and the need for long commutes, in turn lowering air pollution, stress to the residents, and wear and tear on vehicles. Also, by creating a healthier, more attractive place to live it could cause people to be outside in the fresh air and walking more, therefore leading to healthier lifestyles. Additionally, When citizens stay closer to home as their needs are being met closer to home, there is the potential to increase local social interaction, therefore promoting a neighborly sense of community.

CONS

There are potential drawbacks to the concept. If residents are conditioned to use the facilities in their particular 15 minute city, by giving them a sense of security as they only need to walk or…
