Realme has launched its latest budget phone Realme 5 along with Realme 5 Pro () in India. The company is known for feature rich smartphones with aggressive pricing. They made quite a statement in the Indian market with their latest range comprising Realme 3, Realme 3 Pro (Review), and Realme X (). However, with new budget centric Realme 5, they are looking to go way beyond their current offerings.

Realme 5 is an upgraded version of Realme 3, with quad camera setup, more powerful processor, and an improved battery capacity. It is a first smartphone with quad camera setup under Rs 10,000 price category. But does Realme 5 qualify as the best smartphone in the budget segment? Let’s find out in our Realme 5 Review.

Realme 5 Price and Availability:

Realme 5 is priced at Rs. 9,999 for the 3 GB RAM/32 GB storage variant. The 4GB RAM/64 GB storage option comes with a price tag of Rs. 10,999, and it is Rs 11,999 for the 4GB RAM and 128GB storage model. The phone is exclusively available on Flipkart and Realme.com.

Realme 5 Specifications: Realme 5 Design and Display:

The Realme 5 is available in Crystal Blue and Crystal Purple color options. We have picked up the Crystal Blue variant for review.

The phone comes with a polycarbonate rear panel with glossy finish and a crystalline pattern, which looks premium in this price range. But the device easily attracts lots of fingerprints and smudges. You can use protective case provided by the company to avoid the smudges.

The Realme 5 comes with a dew-drop notch at the front that houses the selfie camera. The phone is a bit bulky, and a single-hand use could be an issue due to its screen size. The bottom of the phone houses a speaker, a headphone jack and a micro-USB port. The left side features volume controls and SIM card slot, while the power button is placed at the right side of the phone. As observed, the fingerprint sensor at the back works well, and the face recognition is also very quick.

The Realme 5 sports a 6.5-inch HD+ display, with a 1600 x 720 pixels screen resolution, and a Corning Gorilla Glass 3+ protection. The display looks sharp with good brightness and punchy colors. With the large screen, you will surely enjoy games and videos. The display is fairly legible in outdoor conditions.

Realme 5 Performance and Software:

The Realme 5 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC along with an Adreno 610 GPU. The internal storage can be expanded up to 256GB via microSD card. Realme 5 runs ColorOS6.0 based on Android 9.0 Pie, which is comparable to the experience with Realme 3i.

The latest chipset delivers a great performance during app switching, multi-tasking, and casual gaming like Subway Surfers. Neither we faced any issue in day to day performance, nor did we find any lag during graphics intensive games like PUBG and Asphalt 9. It manages to run PUBG at Medium settings without any major lag and heating issue.

The Realme 5 lacks Widevine L1 certification, which means you will not able to play HD content from the top platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix.

Realme 5 got good numbers in our standard tests. On Antutu benchmark, the phone scored 1,42,878. On PCMark, the device scored 7,719 points, while the T-Rex graphics test in GFXbench scored 50fps. Overall these numbers come out better as compared to Helio P70 in Realme 3 (), and Snapdragon 660 in Realme 2 Pro ().

Realme 5 Camera:

The quad-camera setup is one of the USPs of Realme 5. The device sports a 12MP primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture, 8MP wide-angle camera with 119 degree field of view, a 2MP depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture, and a 2MP macro lens with f/2.4 aperture. For the front, the phone has a 13MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture. The camera features include option like Nightscape, Portrait, Panorama, Expert mode, Time-Lapse, and Slo-mo.

The rear cameras of Realme 5 capture decent photos in outdoor conditions with natural colors and great amount of details. The 12MP rear camera is pretty quick to focus on subject with a snappy shutter speed.

The wide-angle lens captures a large area with good color reproduction and sharpness. The Realme 5 portrait mode does a good job of calculating depth, and is able to blur the background by accurately detecting edges. The Macro sensor is useless and the images came out to be grainy.

The Realme 5 struggles in low light conditions, and as a result, we found images coming out as noisy and grainy. The nightscape mode works well by brightening the image. The selfies clicked by the front camera also came to be great with good colors and details. Overall camera performance was quite impressive, taking into account its price bracket.

Realme 5 Battery:

The Realme 5 is backed by a 5000mAh battery, which provides 1.5 days to 2 days of backup on a single charge with mixed usage. The phone comes with a standard charger which takes around 3 hours to charge the phone from 0 to 100 percent. Connectivity options include dual 4G VoLTE, Dual SIM, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, GLONASS, micro USB Port and a 3.5 headphone jack.

Final Verdict:

Overall Realme 5 is a good package at Rs 9,999 with a quad camera setup, better processor, and a great battery life, as compared to its predecessor Realme 3 (Review). The closest competition to it is expected to come from Redmi Note 7S (), which offers 48MP camera and Full HD display at same price.
