Eat Well, Berkeley: A Series Kickoff

Being broke in college sucks. But being broke and graduating 20 pounds heavier than you began with sucks even more. I, a recent graduate of Cal, am here to help you turn your brokeness into food wokeness.

For the next few weeks, join me as I explore Berkeley’s options for affordable and (reasonably) healthy food. Chime in as I reflect on food security and body image. See how I make the most out of grocery runs. By the end of our journey, I hope we can come to a well-informed conclusion on whether or not this city can truly accommodate low-income/low-budget students and residents.
I’m not at all an expert. I’m just someone who has had to survive on a limited budget, and gained some tips and tricks along the way. I’m choosing the concept of eating well over eating healthy because I want to explore ways to indulge while getting away with it. I also like the idea of eating “well” because it suggests you got more bang for your buck, and you’re satisfied in every way. To stick with this concept, I’ll make sure that all my meals are under $11.
To kick off, my next post will be my thoughts on the new restaurant, Mezzo, on Telegraph and Haste. Stay tuned for more food options outside restaurants, like the on-campus Food Pantry and UC Berkeley Food Collective.
Meanwhile, eat well and be well, Berkeley!
