The Declaration of Independence…of innovation
I wrote this recently to accompany a pitch for more innovation resources to help push my digital brand marketing team toward greater progress. (The original was printed on faux parchment)
There comes a time on every successful team when the accumulation of past success challenges future success. Maintaining past success becomes a full-time pursuit, leaving fleeting time and thought for exponential progress.
At this time, it is the responsibility of the team to deploy a degree of separation between maintenance and progress.
INDEPENDENCE BUT NOT ISOLATION.
Cohesion and connectedness are what make a team a team, rather than a group of individuals in one proximity. Ideas that precede innovation, often bud in the seams of the teams projects, where diversities combine into something greater. Without connection and cohesion, we are without catalyst. Innovation must never become so distant it isn’t part of this catalyst. Furthermore, Innovation must always remain immersed in the context of the team’s purpose; it should ultimately increase the impact of the teams effort. Most importantly, innovation should not ascend to be the sole responsibility of a lonely group. It must thrive in the collective ownership of the team and always be celebrated as the teams collective achievement.
Innovation must remain close to the team. But, without a dedicated forum that transcends the team’s perpetual to-do list, the proper resources rarely collide with fertile minds, and ideas struggle to grow into innovation. In addition, the dedicated forum absolves the team from fear of failure, inspiring a unified understanding of accountable exploration. This freedom shatters the glass ceiling constructed by the team’s anticipation of scrutiny.
So on this Tuesday, the 25th of February, 2014, let pronounce innovation free. Let us declare independence from a system that too often leaves innovation for the exhaustive states between. Let us declare innovation independent. But let us limit this independence, so that innovation always remains collectively owned by the team and is always immersed in the team’s purpose.
WITH THIS INDEPENDENCE,
MAY FUTURE POTENTIAL BE GREATER THAN TODAYS BIGGEST DREAMS.

Delegates of innovation.
