I still don’t understand why people are so quick to jump to conclusions here. In any given situation, there are always two sides to every story. always.
all it takes is a bit of publicity, some “heart wrenching” story line and every one thinks they’re entitled to their opinions on a situation that they truly don’t know much about. so i’d say so many of these responses, naturally, are a little biased.
missing 10 out your FIRST 59 days of employment, in any case, is unacceptable. who does that? sure, her boyfriend was in the hospital and she needed to leave… but had she not taken 10 other days off prior (for so many other similar “excusable emergencies”) to that happening, then maybe she wouldn’t have been given that “harsh” ultimatum.
as a Yelp employee, you’re allowed 12 accrued PTO days annually. she took 10 in LESS THAN 3 months. Yelp had already made the exception. too many times. she took advantage of it and continued to do so until they decided her measly 18k training average wasn’t worth it.
when you get hired for a position, and you’re hired having read your contract, knowing the terms and conditions, you accept them and choose to move forward or not. if you have accepted those terms without knowing fully and truly what they are, then YOU are in a tough situation with no one to blame, and certainly, no place to complain. otherwise, you’re taking advantage of the situation, 100%. period.
food for thought: the past 2 articles-gone-viral about Yelp mistreating their employees, underpaying their employees, etc., have been from those employed at Yelp for LESS THAN 6 MONTHS. what does that mean to you?
what does that mean to me? it means you gotta put in some work before you have an opinion and post a viral blog about your personal issues and the right to complain about whether or not #yelpcares. just like you gotta put in some work to get promoted, get paid more, become a valued employee, etc.
unless you’re a Yelp employee, i don’t really see how anyone can think they know whether or not Yelp is a “shithole” to work for. i’d think that the thousands of other employees who have been at Yelp longer than Jaymee and talia jane would have other opinions on that matter.
