From Clement Wong:
Dear Shu, Eric and Wendy,
I like to express my deepest condolence on the passing of Ed., my dearest colleague at General Atomics. He was by far the best fusion neutronics expert in the world, that was why he was the fusion neutronics leader representing the US for many years.
We knew each other since he joined GA in 1978, and we worked together everyday for many years and demonstrated to the world how fusion reactions can breed its own fuel, tritium. He was also the world expert in hybrid fusion reactor design. It was based on his detailed calculations and his innovations on design that gave us the direction of burning fissile materials to enhance the energy output of a fusion reactor and the reactions with high energy neutrons can also burn the high level waste generated from fission reactor waste. These could really be the actual applications of future fusion reactors, and help to solve the energy needs of the world.
Even after he formed his company in 1990, we were still very close in doing fusion blanket designs, and he continued to educate me in the area of fusion neutronics and fusion nuclear data, which are the crucial knowledge for the development of fusion applications.
After your family moved to Rancho Santa Fe, there were many times that I visited your home and picked Ed. up to meetings in Los Angeles, that was the time we had long conversations and got us to know each other real well. We respected each other’s ideals and philosophies, we avoided discussing subjects that would get ourselves in trouble. He was such a great gentleman that we really never got in trouble in anyway. Your move to RSF was also the reason for us to move to Hacienda Santa Fe, which is just 5 minutes drive from your house.
Due to my very deep respect to Ed., when I found out about his illness 2 years ago, he asked me not to visit and that is why I had not the opportunity to see him before he departed. But at least I should let you know that his work has inspired me to get the next phase of fusion development in place and he had not wasted his technical work at all, even though I am also retired since May 2014.
I am so very glad that Eric has established himself in the very difficult and artistic field of deep sea photography, is able to maintain and exercise you talent in cello and now leading the growing field of aerial photography with drones. At the same time Wendy is now a famous university professor. I congratulate both of you and you have made Ed. proud
Shu I have not follow your successes, I am sure that there are many.
In the mean time, do take care of yourselves, and continue on your successes and have fun in life.
Oh yes, I enjoyed very much the oranges from your orchard, that is why I can get Ed.’s feeling from his poem that you quoted, especially the part of trees getting old, and every spring there are new sprouts.
Sincerely, best wishes,
Please keep in touch.
