For the purposes of this tutorial, I’m using iOS 8.3 on an iPad Mini Retina and the DJI Pilot app. You’ll need a straightened paper clip or equivalent.

  1. Identify the linking button on your Phantom 3. If you’re looking at the front of the Phantom 3 (the camera lens), it’s on the left side on the housing the holds the Vision Positioning System at the rear of the Phantom.
  2. If the Phantom 3 is currently linked to a remote controller, make sure the linked remote controller is not powered on.

3. Plug the iPad to the remote controller using a Lightning cable and launch the DJI Pilot app

4. Turn the remote controller on. DJI Pilot might ask you whether you trust the USB connection. If it does, indicate that you do.

You will see the following screen once the remote controller is on.

Note the red box with “No signal” at the top. This indicates that the remote controller is communicating with DJI Pilot, but that it is not connected to a Phantom. If it says, “Disconnected,” DJI Pilot cannot see the remote controller (mine says this if I disconnect the Lightning cable).

5. Tap on the remote controller icon to the right of “No signal”

6. Swipe to scroll the RC Settings area down until you see “Linking RC” at the bottom. Turn on your Phantom 3 and wait for it to initialize (which takes about 10 seconds).

7. Tap on “Linking RC” and tap “OK” to continue linking. You now have 60 seconds to press the linking button on the Phantom 3.

8. Locate the linking button on the Phantom 3. The link status light behind it will be red if the Phantom isn’t connected to a radio, and the rear LEDs on the Phantom’s arms will be blinking yellow. If the link status light is green, it means that the Phantom is currently connected to a remote controller.

Press the linking button on the Phantom 3 using a straightened paper clip or other thin object.

After a few seconds, the link light on the Phantom 3, which is just behind the link button, will turn green. Your remote controller is now linked to the Phantom 3.
