i still have to finish reading the whole piece so this comment is only tangentially interesting but i find funny how everyone think that everyone but their own category’s expertise is recognized and compensated.

as a former computer programmer i can assure you that people usually assume:

a) that you know how to do anything with computers
b) everything takes just a couple of minutes
c) you like doing stuff with computers

and, consequently, you should do it for free.

i’m also pretty sure that doctors constantly get questions from people (often strangers they just met by chance) asking for a quick diagnosis of a problem.
