Augmented Reality — the New Frontier between Real and Virtual

Augmented Reality (AR) technologies enable overlay fictional elements to the real world using sensors, such as a mobile phone camera or webcam. Using Augmented Reality, the user receives an “increase” in the amount of information available that helps to enrich the perception of its environment. Augmented Reality is different from Virtual Reality (VR) that it completely replaces our vision of the real world by a “synthetic” reconstruction of it. Augmented Reality technologies tend to erase the boundary between the real world and the virtual world.

As a strategic technology for the development of high value-added services, Augmented Reality has many application areas for professionals but also for the general public, in the area of recreation, health, tourism or the environment protection.
