The lessons that will be learned from the Trump mistake are many: Firstly, the electoral system needs a severe overhaul, especially the Electoral College. It is an outdated, racially-biased distortion of the real vote, form the people. Trump did not win the election, he lost by 3-million votes.
Secondly, proper checks and balances must be put in place to guarentee the integrity of presidential candidates. Trump was known to have Mafia affiliations and intimate business contacts with Russia and yet he was passed, despite not showing his tax returns. That needs to change because the most important political job on the planet requires integrity.
Giving one man so much power and with no recourse to change events after the inauguration is not good for the US or the world. Other political systems have checks and balances, so that the people have a say through their elected members. Even when it became clear Trump was dishonest and likely committing acts of treason the US seems powerless to control him.
His maturity is seriously in question on matters of state. He is a spoilt child in a toy shop and has the nuclear codes. He has proved himself to be a man who does not heed warnings, nor take advice and is willing to engage the US and other countries in conflict to make a point, regardless of how many lives are at stake. War should always be a last resort to any disagreement and putting human lives at risk should not be left to this man’s judgment.
It now seems likely that Trump will be found guilty of crimes against the state and, hopefully, he will be punished for treason. The US should make the necesary changes and then make sure it goes back to the people to decide those changes and choose the next President.
