I have been kind of obsessed with the question of what is beauty since the 80’s. It was the era of the supermodels, the holy trinity of Linda-Christy-Naomy. I bought every fashion magazine and it made me happy!

I never thought I wanted to look like them or live like them, I just enjoy beauty. And then something changed, the “pretty-ugly” was born with models like Kristen McMenamy, Stella Tennant and others and I just don’t get it.

I know a lot of people talk about everyone being some kind of pretty but this is a completely different discussion; they are talking about personality, diversity, positive body image etc.

And don’t get me wrong, there is nothing bad about that, I do not want my child growing to believe that beauty is the most important thing and teach her/him to be superficial, absolutely not! But beauty and aesthetics have to do with only one thing: the golden ratio!

If you really want to know who is pretty, put 10 women in a room with a baby, the baby will not take his/her eyes of the pretty one, since our mind is programmed even before we are born to search for the golden ratio face.

And speaking of “pretty-ugly”, I have a friend who modeled way back when we were in high school; one day she came back from a shoot crying, she saw that on the back of her photos the agency wrote “pretty-ugly”. She never modeled again, for a young 16 year old girl who is just starting to explore her femininity and sexuality, this was devastating. So if you think this “beauty in diversity” is such a good thing for young women, think again.

Now, let’s get back to my twenties, these were the 90’s, fashion designers didn’t want models to rule the world anymore so they went for pretty-ugly and heroin chic, (which we all pay a huge price for until today). You couldn’t see the models anymore, they were so skinny, had no brows, no hair…they literally became invisible- And what happened now? Movie stars became beauty ideals, they got the big endorsements, they got the magazine covers, and they sold the cloths.

Don’t get me wrong, some movie stars are beautiful, and it would have been great if we got back to the old Hollywood glamour times. I mean, the most beautiful women ever came from old Hollywood: Liz Taylor, Lauren Bacall, Audrey Hepburn, Eva Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, Kathrin Hepburn…these were real golden ratio beauties!

But we ended up with Jennifer Aniston as being the most popular magazine cover model.

I have nothing against Jenifer Aniston, she might be a wonderful person and a great actress – but she is not pretty! I don’t like seeing her on the cover of a magazine! I spend money to enjoy real beauty.

You see, this glamorous clothing and beauty give us the escape from our daily not so beautiful life. I do not want to see the girl next door, I do not want to see myself, I want to see the golden ratio untouchable glamour.

These days it’s even worse, I mean, Lena Dunham on the Vogue cover?! What’s wrong with you Anna Wintour? You became a PC fashion victim that embraces diversity? For god sake! You are a in the BEAUTY business!

But I’m not that mad at you Anna, because we had the Kim Kardashian Vogue cover! I could live without Kanye, (I don’t like men on my Vogue cover), but thank God for Kim Kardashian!

For me Kim K. is the new Cinderella, she makes us believe in fairy tales again.

If you look at the most popular princess of today, (the Duchess of Cambridge), yes, everybody says she is beautiful and lovely but the truth is, not so much! Even tons of makeup still doesn’t change the fact that she is Plain Jane and you wouldn’t even look at her twice if she passed you on the street.

The kind of beauty that I like is the one you can’t take your eyes of, you can’t stop starring. I like to be “wowed” by beauty and Kim K. has this sort of beauty and she managed to make her beauty a huge commercial asset, (not to mention the booty which deserves a special post by itself).

Usually I’m not that keen on commercial popularity but in this case, I am so happy she and her mom are doing such a great job.

I know we have to live with the bi-products, such as Kendall Jenner becoming a supermodel, something that would never have happened without Kim K. because again, I do not mean to offend anyone but – plain Jain…

So you see, Justin Timberlake brought sexy back and Kim Kardashian brought beauty back!

Thank you Kim! You may have brought superficiality to an art, (and I say it with a lot of respect, no cynicism at all), but you brought the real beauty and aesthetics back to the front and if I can’t see a beautiful fashion model on the Vogue cover than I want to see you!

p.s

Did you notice that all the 80’s-90’s supermodels are making a comeback? And in their 40’s Linda Evangelista, Amber Valetta, Caroline Murphy, Eva herzigova and Christy Turlington are still more beautiful than most of today’s models?

Another thank you goes to Victoria’s Secret; they are the only company that maintains real beauty standards throughout the years.
