A Power Connection that leads to Victory

by Ed Elliott

In 2nd Timothy, the Apostle Paul writes a young minister and gives him some valuable insight into what living a victorious life in Christ is all about.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. 2 Timothy 1:7

Timothy was a young minister who struggled with a few insecurities. Paul tells him not to let anyone despise him because of his young age and in the above verse Paul lays out for Timothy a profound truth that God does not give anyone a spirit of fear but He does give us power and love which both will lead to having a sound mind. Fear produces the exact opposite. It makes a person feel insecure and powerless. It can make you feel that God can’t or doesn’t love you and this leads to confusion. Confusion always leads to defeat.

So, Paul is trying to establish in Timothy’s heart the truth that will anchor him in the gospel. The same gospel that Paul himself was grounded and rooted in. We see Paul teach these exact principles to the churches he wrote to in his other epistles.

Power:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16

Love:

“That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” Ephesians 3:17–20

Sound mind:

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2

The power of the gospel removes all shame and guilt through the knowledge of how much God loves us. These truths, once established in our heart, produce in us a sound mind because we now know what God’s will is for us.

Here is the end result of an established heart and sound mind.

“For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” Romans 14:17
