God loves us at our very worst

In the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15:11–32, Jesus taught that the father would embrace, love, accept, and restore a person at their very worst; not when they are at their best.

It was the sin focused critical fault finding elder brother who desired to see his brother punished and rejected. Legalism is incapable of showing mercy and compassion.

Neither of the two sons knew the heart of their father. The prodigal never expected to be a son again and the sin-focused brother couldn’t enjoy what he already had.

God loves us at our very worst and trying to earn or work for what He has already given us is a denial of who He is and what He has done. We cannot make ourselves acceptable to God but we can trust what Jesus has done on our behalf.
