Why I Love Being an Auntie
You get all of the fun & none of the responsibility!
I’m a very proud auntie to two nieces & one nephew whom I absolutely adore. My eight year old niece is an only child and lives with her parents in California. Her younger cousins, a boy age six and his little sister aged almost three both live in Co. Tipperary in Ireland. I have photos of them hanging all over my apartment & I usually choose a photo of one (or all of them!) as my phone screensaver. There is nothing in the world I wouldn’t do for them.
I’m not a mother myself so I can devote my spare time to being the ‘cool’ auntie and spoiling them rotten! Here are some of the reasons why I feel being an auntie is a both a privilege & a special gift:
1. You get ALL of the fun & none of the responsibility
I’m fortunate enough to be a godmother to my three year old niece. She is like a mini version of my sister. Nothing beats the feeling of arriving at my sister’s house & seeing my niece’s little face light up with excitement when she sees me — it’s priceless! My sister can head off to her Pilates class & I’m more than happy to babysit. My niece & I love watching the Muppet Show together. She loves when I start singing, “It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights..” After I finish, she always says, “Sing it again!”
2. You get to spoil them
As a fashion lover, there is nothing more fun than picking out cute little outfits for my nieces! My youngest niece is turning three in a few weeks and because she loves unicorns, I have picked out a denim dress with a unicorn & a cute pair of Mary Jane shoes that I can’t wait to see her wear. There is nothing more fun than cuddling up with both my niece & nephew & reading them bedtime stories (especially about farting unicorns!)
3. You get to do kid stuff again without looking like a creep!
I have so much fun getting in touch with my inner child when I take my niece & nephew to the playground. My niece & I both love swinging on the swings together seeing who can go highest. I have a contest with my nephew to see who can make the silliest face while jumping on a trampoline! During the Christmas holidays, he & I made animal masks from paper plates, crepe paper & some glue. Parents sometimes don’t have the time or energy to do these things with their kids because they are dealing with the day-to-day responsibilities & routine of raising kids.
4. You can be their best friend & role model throughout their lives
I always want my nieces & nephew to know how much I love them & that I’ll be there for them no matter what. I want to be the person they can turn to for advice or to help solve problems if they don’t want to talk to Mommy or Daddy. A few months ago, my sister recorded herself asking my niece why she loves me & she sweetly replied:
“Coz…I always give her a kiss.”
The innocence of children. Hearing this meant so much to me & whenever I’m feeling down or having a bad day, I always play this back & it puts smile on my face.
