The Organization of the NOW! The Future is Here!

Unless you have had your head in the sand, it should be crystal clear to all of us that the combination of Covid, geopolitical volatility, supply chain disruptions, political and social divisiveness, bank failures, and advancing technology (such as ChatGPT) means that we are in an environment of that is not stable and will continue to be volatile for the foreseeable future. What does this mean for organizations?

Organizations are going to have to adopt a new story — a story based on ADAPTATION — continuous adaptation- adapting at the speed of change. The Organization of the NOW will need to become a Highly Adaptive Learning Organization being able to learn — unlearn and relearn at the speed of change.

The current story that exists in many organizations is based on efficiency, repetition, greed, and survival of the fittest. The biggest driver in many US corporations is quarterly earnings. That story will not lead to a Highly Adaptive Learning Organization.

A Highly Adaptive Learning Organization requires Highly Adaptive Workers.

As technology continues to advance workers will be needed to do the tasks that technology won’t be able to do well. As of today, that comes down to three types of tasks:
1. Thinking in ways different from smart technology’s way of thinking. Those ways are higher-order critical thinking; making moral judgments; going into the unknown and figuring things out; creative, imaginative, and innovative thinking; and making decisions in situations where there is lots of uncertainty and not a lot of data.
2. Excelling at building caring, trusting, positive emotional relationships with other human beings, including teammates, customers, co-workers, patients, and clients, etc.
3. Excelling at doing trade jobs that require human dexterity and iterative diagnostic definitions of the problem and iterative trial- and-error approaches to solving the problem.

Those three types of tasks are not rote tasks. They are not machine-like tasks. They are human cognitive and emotional tasks.

The Organizations that have the most Highly Adaptive People will be the organizations that will win!

How do you change an efficiency-based command and control system that is addicted to ever increasing short-term results? You must change the culture, the mindsets, and the behaviors of the people in the organization, and it starts at the top!

The Organizations that embrace this reality the fastest and begin to create a culture that is behavioral-based and designed to optimize the highest levels of thinking, listening, learning, exploring, innovating, and collaborating will be the winners. That is how you create a Highly Adaptive Learning Organization.
