When I was a kid I was obsessed with horror films. In particular slashers like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. The first R rated film my dad took me to was Freddy Vs. Jason. Although I don’t remember much as it’s been over thirteen years since I’ve seen it. The ending where Lori beheads Freddy always stuck with me. I didn’t know it at the time but Lori’s character was a classic slasher film “final girl”.

The final girl is simply the last character left to take care of the killer. In most films she is the only non-sinner meaning she typically doesn’t drink or have sex. She essentially always does the right thing causing us to route for her to overcome a killer whose strength and ability seem greater than hers.

However in a modern slasher You’re Next the protagonist and final girl, Erin takes on different traits. Early on in the film we see that Erin likes to drink and almost seems weak. I thought she would be killed off early in the film but, as soon as killers arrive and start prey on their victims she springs into action and it almost feels like this isn’t her first time in a slasher film. I enjoyed the new take on the old genre, as Erin doesn’t fit the tropes of the classic final girl. She’s tough, level headed and in general a badass.

These traits lead her to the end to find that her boyfriend was behind the whole thing. I didn’t see it coming but I figured there would be some twist as he was in ever shot in the first act then disappears until the last five minutes of the film.
