WHEN YOU DON’T LIKE THE PATH YOU’RE HEADED.
So I’ve been reading all week the book ‘First Things First’ by #StephenCovey and it has been nothing short of an amazing experience.
I’m so full of excitement and I can’t hold it in any longer least I explode. 🌋 I had been expecting the familiar platitudes of time management, prioritizing, and self development when I was about to begin my read, but boy was I disappointed (in a good way though 😊😊)
Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be sharing what I consider the best insights with you all. Please indulge. me, it just doesn’t feel right to keep it all to myself. 😉(you’ll thank me later)
Ever heard of the ‘See/Do/Get cycle’?
If you haven’t, don’t sweat, you’re not alone. This cycle made me understand why people often find it difficult to break bad habits, form new good ones or struggle with changing the various outcomes of their life
This theory states that the way we #See things(our paradigm), affects what we #Do( our attitudes & behaviours), which consequently determine what we #Get(our results).
In other words, any change of attitude without a corresponding change in paradigm is based on an illusion.
Little wonder, why the many new year resolutions people make in the spur of the moment, or simply because others are doing same doesn’t last.
To live a healthier life for example, one must change the way food is viewed(paradigm)
An individual who sees food as a means to nourish one’s body and improve total health is less likely to indulge in unhealthy eating habits.
New attitudes can’t be installed, they must be grown from the right paradigm.
I remember the words my Chancellor chanted, while yet an undergraduate, each time he got the opportunity:
“It’s insanity to keep doing the same thing, expecting different results”
If you don’t like the attitudes you’re exhibiting or results you’re getting, it’s high time you examined the paradigms from which they grow.
Form personal experience I’ve come to realize that the things we see & hear have the ability to change our Paradigm. The solution is to find someone who already has the results we desire. Read their books, listen to their podcast, or CD’s and you’ll find the substance that changed their paradigm, their attitudes and ultimately their results.
Don’t be in a hurry to imitate attitudes; if they are not coming from the right paradigms, you’re simple building castles in the sky.
I agree with the words of Plato:“The unexamined life is not worth living”. A sincere evaluation of our lives is the only path to making changes that would not only last a lifetime, but also serve our best interest.
After all the challenges we face cannot be resolved by the same level of thinking that created them.
