看后翼棄兵學英文 (第一集)
后翼棄兵應該是2020年尾最受關注的Netflix影集之一了 ! 這套真的拍得很精緻也用心，女主真的美到翻。 像我藉由看美劇學英文的人應該很多，跟你們分享我的英文筆記，可以一起討論喔! 影集看起來、英文也get 起來!
1. Gambit
先從片名講起 后翼棄兵 The Queen’s Gambit
Gambit 在象棋的哲學裡代表的是得到與失去，有點像是雙刃劍的概念，有捨有得。所以由片名大概就可以知道故事大概是在敘述主角的人生無常。(不然也部會拿來拍戲吧!)
片頭開始孤兒院在敘述Beth狀況時說到
“Her mother, Alice Harmon, was pronounced dead at the scene” (54:53)(Netflix中譯) 她的母親艾利斯哈蒙當場死亡
was pronounced dead 這裡是被動式，指被宣告死亡
at the scene 在現場、當場
2. Settled
院長向Beth介紹孤兒院時說…
“Let’s get you settled” (52:54)
(Netflix中譯) 先安頓下來
settled (adv、adj) 固定、穩定
這個字在第一集後面也出現，
院長問Beth “你有想去當地高中下西洋棋嗎? Beth 回答"我想去"。
園長就回說 “It's settled, then.” (16:38)
(Netflix中譯) 就這麼說定了 (這件事就這樣固定了)
3. Disposition
院方給Beth 維他命與鎮定劑時說到
“Green’s to even your disposition.” (49:38)
(Netflix中譯) 綠色的可平衡性情
even (v) 平衡
disposition (n) 性格性情
(例句) I loved working with Mary because she had such a kind manner and sweet disposition.
劇中綠色膠囊稱 tranquilizer鎮定劑
4. Fringes
早期還有幼幼版的Beth 有著超顯眼的短瀏海，真的害我也很想剪一個
short fringes 短瀏海
fringes (n) 瀏海 、基本上垂墜是一條條都可以叫 fringes
5. Diagonal
工友問Beth 棋子怎麼走時，Beth說到
“on the diagonals.”(37:41)
(Netflix中譯) 斜著走。
diagonal (adj) 斜角線
6. Resign
“You resign now.” (34:07)
(Netflix中譯) 你現在棄子認輸!
(逐字翻)你現在放棄!
resign (V) 放棄、退出 (離職也用同一字)
“It’s not a rule, its sportsmanship.” (33:52)
(Netflix中譯) 這不是規則，這是運動精神。
7. Gloat
Beth 第一次嘗到勝利的時候，工友說到…
“You’re gloating.”
(Netflix中譯) 你在暗自得意。
gloat (adj) 沾沾自喜 興災樂禍
(例句) I know I shouldn’t gloat, but it really serves him right.
我知道自己不應該幸災樂禍，他真是活該。
8. Chaperone
向院長請示去當地高中參加棋藝社活動時，院長的回答
“I’m a bit wary of letting Elizabeth go off to local high school. ” (17:18)(Netflix中譯) 讓伊莉莎白去當地的高中，我覺得有些不妥。
“Oh, well, I would chaperone.” (17:16)
(Netflix中譯) 我會護送她。
chaperone (v) 陪伴、陪同
(n) 監護人 原指年長的女性陪伴年幼的女生或是病人
9. Go figure
當院方告訴Beth都政府下令不准給孩童鎮定劑時說到
“go figure” (15:06)
(Netflix中譯) 難以置信
go figure 通常是帶有負面的難以置信
10. Edgy
當Beth跟Jolene說綠色膠囊還在同一個地方時
Jolene 回答 “That a fact? I ain’t noticed.” (13:47)
(Netflix中譯) 是嗎? 我沒注意到。<強調已發生的事實>
Jolene 問Beth “You’ve withdrawal symptoms” (13:40)
(Netflix中譯) 你出現戒斷症狀?Jolene 又問Beth “You getting edgy?” (13:34)
(Netflix中譯)你變得急躁?
edgy (adj) 緊張不安、煩躁的
(例句) He was feeling a little edgy about the whole thing.
他對於所有事情都感到煩躁不安。
edgy當名詞(n)的時候當作邊緣、邊邊 (圖中的雙關有get 到嗎?)
