45. The root of unhappiness
Most of our sadness, disappointment, and anger can be traced back to one main reason. Expectation.
It is in our nature to want to exert control over everything. We like to expect ourselves to always be at our best, someone to act in a certain way, or things to work in our favor.
But the world is a crazy place with infinite variables that could alter the course of the most elaborate plans in seconds. It is impossible to have everything fall into place just like the way we want.
If anything, we should expect the worst. We all know that nothing lasts forever. So the more attached we are to someone or something, the worse we become when we lose it. We are better off acknowledging the worse possibility early on and prepare for it than be jolly in our bubble and blow up when it bursts.
I’m not saying that we should just surrender to life. We still need to give our best in everything we do. But once we’ve done everything within our reach, let go of any expectation and let the universe do the rest.
It’s good to have a positive outlook in life, but keep an open mind that anything can and will happen. That way, you will stay grounded to accept whatever results that may come. Expect nothing, so you can truly appreciate everything.
