Bias suggests predisposition, but bias can form over time from simply observing the character, ethics, values and behaviors of someone. Which is to say, it’s possible to disagree politically yet still respect and even admire someone who represents the qualities deemed normal and essential for positions of leadership.

Obama and his wife were admired by many even if his handling of issues didn’t always achieve the intended goals. Obama used intelligence and nuance while president. He seemed fundamentally honest as a person. Those who truly hated him had other issues, such as the fact that he wasn’t white.

Trump is the exact opposite. He is fundamentally dishonest, far from intellectual or even intelligent, narcissistic in obsessive ways and easily angry. He isn’t a nice person, not a role model and continues to demonstrate a level of incompetence not often seen in leadership. Bias about him is inevitable.

Trump’s supporters keep missing how important character is in a leader. They overlook that which they would not tolerate in others. They are sure the ends justify the means. They are wrong. The means is what leadership is all about.
