Great article.

Firstly, I’m not a native English speaker, so sorry if I make mistakes writing this message.

I would like to say that I’m currently living the same experience as you.

My previous background was based on Python and I’ve had to change to Android to keep my job. Despite this, I really like developing Android applications.

The process is being really hard because I’m dedicating my free time to learn Android development on my own without help or mentoring, mostly reading tutorials or watching videos on Youtube, as I need to finish my project’s tasks as soon as posible. This situation is draining my life and affecting my health.

I’m doing my best trying to write clean code but I know that I’m not developing as professional Android developers do, because I’m not using Android design patterns, testing or advanced practices.

The problem is that I haven’t enough time to learn these things because I must finish my tasks as soon as possible and I can’t take online courses in my working time. Apart from this, I don’t have too much free time to study after a long work day, English lessons, eating, sleeping, cooking, etc.

Furthermore, I have to develop my Android app in my company without help, mentoring, a team or a person leading my project. All of this is really frustrating.

And the worst thing is that I’m feeling that all this effort that I’m doing will be for nothing, because my company doesn’t usually get Android projects (it’s focused on other software areas) and because my bosses are thinking to leave native apps to start developing hybrid apps or progressive web applications (as they think that it’s needed less time to develop a hybrid app).

So because all of these, and after leaving my Python experience to keep my job and putting a lot of effort to learn and develop and Android app on my own without help or a team, I feel that I’m throwing my life away.
